How it works

How to Read the RPE Percentage Chart

RPE describes how hard a set felt, not just how heavy it was — two lifters can move the same weight for the same reps and rate it very differently depending on how many more reps they had left.

What RPE means

RPE 10 means the set was taken to failure — no more reps possible. RPE 9 means you could have done one more rep (1 RIR), RPE 8 means two more (2 RIR), and so on down the scale.

RPE to percentage

For a given rep count and RPE, the chart gives an expected %1RM. Estimated 1RM is then weight ÷ (%1RM ÷ 100) — the same set can imply a different 1RM depending on how hard it actually felt.

Working backward

To find a working weight, this RPE calculator multiplies your known 1RM by the chart’s %1RM for your target reps and RPE, useful for programming a specific “hard but not maximal” set without guessing.

Where it’s least precise

The chart is built around 1–6 rep sets in well-trained lifters. Very high-rep sets, brand-new lifters, and RPE below 6 all introduce more guesswork, since perceived effort is harder to calibrate in those ranges.

Perceived effort fades quickly once the bar is racked. Rating a set a minute later, after breathing settles, tends to underestimate how hard it actually was — rate it immediately for the most accurate chart lookup.

The RPE/RIR chart is built and validated mainly on 1–6 rep sets. A single 8- or 10-rep RPE rating carries more noise than a low-rep one — treat those outputs as a rough range, not an exact number.
