Kayak Paddle Length Calculator
Enter your height and your kayak’s beam width to get a starting paddle length from the Werner touring sizing chart reproduced by REI. The result is a fit starting point rather than a universal size: paddle model, stroke style, seat height, torso proportions and personal technique can change the best choice.
How to Determine Kayak Paddle Length
For a general touring or recreational starting point, REI’s published Werner chart uses paddler height and kayak width. Stroke style and boat setup can then help you decide whether to try a different size.
Measure your standing height
Use your height to select one of the chart’s four paddler-height bands.
Find the kayak’s beam width
Beam is the kayak’s widest point. REI notes that wider kayaks generally require longer paddles.
Use the chart intersection
The calculator looks up the cell where your height band and beam-width band meet. It does not invent a continuous formula between chart cells.
Check stroke style and the specific paddle brand
High-angle paddling generally uses a shorter setup than low-angle paddling. Manufacturer charts vary, so compare the result with the sizing guide for the exact paddle you plan to use.

height band × beam-width band lookupKayak Paddle Length Chart by Height and Boat Width
This table reproduces the Werner paddle sizing chart published in REI’s kayak-paddle guidance. REI advises checking the specific brand you are considering because sizing specifications can vary.
| Paddler height | Under 23″ | 23″ to 28″ | 28″ to 32″ | Over 32″ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5′ tall | 210 | 220 | 230 | 240 |
| 5′ to 5’6″ | 215 | 220 | 230 | 240 |
| 5’6″ to 6′ | 220 | 220 | 230 | 250 |
| Over 6′ | 220 | 230 | 240 | 250 |
This is a reference chart, not a universal standard. Boundary handling in the calculator is documented in the calculation breakdown; if your exact paddle manufacturer publishes its own chart, use that manufacturer’s guidance for the final purchase decision.
Kayak Paddle Measurements and Fit Factors
Height and beam width drive the reference-chart lookup. Other fit factors are useful when checking the result against a manufacturer’s own guidance.
Standing height
Used to select the paddler-height row in the reference chart.
Kayak beam width
The boat’s widest point. Used to select the chart column.
Stroke angle
Bending Branches describes high-angle paddling as generally pairing with a shorter paddle and low-angle paddling with a longer one.
Seat height
A higher seat can increase reach requirements, especially on wide recreational and fishing kayaks.
Torso and proportions
REI notes that body proportions can matter when choosing between sizes; a chart is a starting point rather than a custom fitting.
Specific paddle model
Manufacturers can publish different charts for different paddle designs, so confirm the final size against the model you intend to buy.
Kayak Paddle Length Calculator Examples
These examples are direct lookups from the reference chart. They are starting sizes, not guarantees of personal fit.
5’6″ paddler, 24″ kayak
The 5’–5’6″ row and 23″–28″ column intersect at 220 cm.
5’10” paddler, 28″ kayak
The calculator treats 28.0 inches as the start of the 28″–32″ band, producing 230 cm.
6’2″ paddler, 33″ kayak
For a wide or high-seat kayak, also check the exact paddle manufacturer’s guidance before buying.
Kayak Paddle Sizing Mistakes to Avoid
Sizing from height alone
Height is only the starting point. Skipping kayak width or paddling style can point you to a different chart cell or a different manufacturer recommendation.
Using one length for both stroke styles
High-angle and low-angle strokes follow different size charts. A paddle sized for relaxed touring often feels too long for an aggressive, vertical stroke, and the reverse is also true.
Confusing overall kayak length with beam width
Paddle sizing depends on the beam (widest point), not overall length. A long, narrow touring kayak can need a shorter paddle than a short, wide recreational one.
Applying a standard chart to very short or young paddlers
Paddlers well outside the typical adult height range, including children, are usually better served by a manufacturer’s youth-specific sizing rather than an extrapolated standard chart.
Assuming the exact recommended length is in stock
Available lengths vary by paddle model. Check the exact product’s size options; an adjustable-length model can be useful when multiple boats or seat positions are involved.
