Your two portions on the AP Lang exam are not scored equally or averaged equally. There are 45 multiple-choice questions in Section I, each worth one point, and guessing is not penalized. Three lengthy essays — argument, rhetorical analysis, and synthesis — are included in Section II. Each essay is graded from 0 to 6 using a published rubric. The exam scales the essay total up to 55 points before adding it to the multiple-choice score, reflecting the official 45%/55% weighting, in order to combine a 45-point objective component with an 18-point rubric-based section into a single number.
Because essays make up a larger portion of the composite, a student who performs exceptionally well on the multiple-choice portion but writes three mediocre essays may still receive a score below a 3, whereas a student with average multiple-choice performance and consistently excellent essays may receive a 4 or 5. From raw points to a composite score
The final 1–5 AP score is derived from the exam’s conversion of two highly disparately scored parts into a single 100-point composite.
Step 1 — MCQ score
Since the section already accounts for 45% of the exam and each of the 45 multiple-choice questions is worth one raw point, your MCQ weighted score is just your number of right answers out of 45.
Step 2 — FRQ score
Your three essay scores, which range from 0 to 6, add up to a raw score of 18. This sum is scaled to the 55% weight of the section: (Essay Total ÷ 18) × 55.
Step 3 — Composite score
MCQ Weighted + FRQ Weighted = Composite, out of 100. This single number is what gets mapped to the final 1–5 AP score.
Step 4 — Composite to AP score
The College Board doesn’t announce the precise cutoffs ahead of time; instead, they’re determined annually through a standard-setting procedure. Based on recent exam cycles, the approximate ranges that are frequently mentioned are displayed in the table below.

Where score estimates go wrong
Treating the two sections as equally weighted
The exam is 55% free answer and 45% multiple choice, despite the temptation to assume 50/50. Strong essay performance matters more to your ultimate result than the raw point totals alone would suggest, since essays are given greater weight.
Averaging essay scores instead of summing them
The FRQ formula scales the sum of all three essays (out of 18), not their average. The section is severely understated when an average is entered instead of the individual scores.
Assuming the cutoff table is official
The College Board uses a standard-setting process to determine the precise composite-to-score cutoffs, which aren’t disclosed prior to the distribution of scores. The ranges displayed here are frequently used historical approximations, not a guarantee.
Forgetting there’s no guessing penalty
Since there’s no reduction of points for incorrect answers, every multiple-choice question is worth answering, even if it’s just a guess. Blanking questions never improves your score — it just costs you points.
Comparing this composite to a percentage grade
Because of the weighting and scaling, composite scores in the 50s and 60s are typical for students who still receive a 3 or 4, so a composite score of 60 out of 100 isn’t “60” in the sense that a class test score would be.
