Your multiple-choice and free-response scores aren’t averaged equally by APUSH — the exam weights the 55-question multiple-choice component at 40% and the combined free-response segment at 60% of your final composite. Because a strong performance on the SAQs, DBQs, and LEQs can offset a weak MCQ section (and vice versa), it’s easy to misjudge where you truly stand based on raw points alone.
This APUSH calculator maps your resulting composite to the College Board’s approximate 1–5 score bands, so you can get a realistic sense of where you land well before results are released. It does this by applying the same 40/60 weighting to whatever numbers you have, whether they’re raw points out of 55 and 22 or straight percentages if you’re working from a practice test that reports it that way. Turning raw points into your AP score
APUSH assigns 40% weight to the multiple-choice portion and 60% to the combined free-response portion, which includes the long essay, the document-based question, and short answers.
The formula
Composite = (MCQ ÷ 55) × 40 + (FRQ ÷ 22) × 60. MCQ contributes up to 40 points, combined FRQ up to 60, toward a 100-point composite.
What’s in the FRQ total
Nine points for the three short-answer questions, seven for the document-based question, and six for the long essay make up the 22 available FRQ points.

My multiple-choice score was 38 out of 55, and my SAQ, DBQ, and LEQ scores totaled 14 out of 22. What am I likely to score?

Where self-estimates go wrong
Averaging MCQ and FRQ evenly
Since the free-response portion is weighted at 60% of the composite, not half, treating both sections equally understates its true significance.
Scoring the DBQ or LEQ separately instead of combining them
The FRQ raw score is a single total out of 22 from the SAQ, DBQ, and LEQ combined; entering the points from just one essay instead of the total will understate your composite.
Assuming a fixed composite always maps to the same AP score
Because the College Board adjusts cutoffs somewhat each year based on the difficulty of that administration, a composite right at a border (such as 56 or 57) could land on either side of the line.
Leaving MCQ answers blank out of fear of a penalty
An unanswered question costs the same as a wrong one on the AP exam, since there’s no penalty for incorrect answers — so it’s always worth guessing instead of skipping.
