Why Use an AP Biology Score Calculator
The AP Biology exam is divided into a 60-question Multiple Choice section and a 6-question Free Response section earning 34 raw points. These two totals count equally toward the composite but don’t share a scale. To see where a raw score from a practice test or released exam falls on the 1–5 scale, the FRQ portion has to be scaled up before it’s added to the MCQ score and compared against past cutoffs.
Once you enter your two raw scores, it automatically calculates the composite, compares it to frequently mentioned cutoff ranges, and provides an expected AP score along with the qualification language that College Board employs for that range.
From raw points to a 1–5 score
Two parts are combined into one composite in AP Biology, which is then mapped into the 1–5 AP scale.
Section I — Multiple Choice
50% of your composite is made up of 60 questions. There is no penalty for guessing; your raw number right (0–60) is used straight.
Section II — Free Response
Six questions totaling 34 raw points — two long-form and four short-answer. To match the weight of the MCQ portion, that raw score is scaled up to 60 points.
The composite
Composite = MCQ Raw + (FRQ Raw ÷ 34 × 60), producing a score out of 120 that’s roughly half MCQ, half FRQ.
Why estimates vary
No third-party calculator, including this one, can replicate the precise official cutoff, because College Board equates cutoffs annually based on the exam’s difficulty.

Where AP Biology scoring gets misread
Treating this as the official conversion
The College Board matches cutoffs to the exam difficulty of that year and never releases the precise raw-to-scaled table. This calculator, like all others, is an estimate based on past trends rather than a guarantee.
Forgetting the FRQ score needs scaling
Free Response is out of 34, not 60 raw points. Adding the raw FRQ score straight to MCQ without first scaling it up understates its full 50% weight in the composite.
Assuming each FRQ question is weighted equally
Check your own rubric-based grading instead of assuming that the two long-form questions and four short-answer questions contribute an equal number of points to the 34-point total.
Reading a borderline composite as certain
A composite right at the edge of a cutoff band, such as 59 vs 60, could land on either side once the real year’s equating is applied — treat scores close to a boundary as truly ambiguous.
Ignoring guessing penalties from older exam formats
Since incorrect responses aren’t penalized in the current AP Biology Multiple Choice, the raw score is simply the number right. Using an outdated guessing-penalty formula from another AP exam or an older format will understate your actual MCQ raw score.
