The share of students earning a 5 dropped from 18.9% in 2025 to 15% in 2026, while the overall pass rate (3 or higher) held close to steady at 70–71%. That pattern — a stable pass rate but a shrinking top tier — usually means the FRQ section, not the MCQ section, is where the exam got harder to separate a 4 from a 5.
From raw points to a 1–5 AP Biology score
Two sections combine into one composite, which is then compared against the bands above.
Section I — Multiple Choice
50% of your composite comes from 60 questions. There is no guessing penalty, so your raw score is simply the number you answered correctly, from 0 to 60.
Section II — Free Response
Six questions worth 34 raw points total — two long-form questions at 9 points each and four short-answer questions at 4 points each. This raw score is scaled up to 60 points to match the MCQ section’s weight.

Composite = MCQ Raw + (FRQ Raw ÷ 34 × 60), producing a score out of 120 that splits evenly between the two sections.
Why the exact cutoff moves
The College Board equates cutoffs to that year’s specific exam difficulty and released FRQ set, which is why the same composite can sit in different bands from one year to the next.

Treating this as the official conversion
The College Board equates cutoffs to that year’s exam difficulty and never publishes the exact raw-to-scaled table. This calculator, like every other public one, is an estimate built from historical trends.
Forgetting the FRQ score needs scaling
Free Response is out of 34 raw points, not 60. Adding the raw FRQ total straight into the composite without scaling it up understates its full 50% weight.
Assuming every FRQ question is worth the same
The two long-form questions are worth 9 points each and the four short-answer questions are worth 4 points each — grade against the real rubric rather than splitting 34 evenly across six questions.
Reading a borderline composite as certain
A composite right at a band edge, such as 73 vs 74, could land on either side once the real year’s equating is applied. Treat scores near a boundary as genuinely ambiguous.
Leaving MCQ answers blank out of caution
Incorrect multiple-choice answers carry no penalty on the current AP Biology exam, so an educated guess never costs points. Answer every question.
