Unlike AP English Language or AP English Literature, where essays carry more weight than multiple choice, AP Statistics splits its composite exactly down the middle: 50% multiple choice, 50% free response.
That even split means neither section can fully rescue the other. A student with a near-perfect MCQ score but weak free-response communication will land in roughly the same place as a student with average MCQ performance and strong free-response reasoning — because both sections are scaled to the same 50-point ceiling before they’re added together.

An even split between MCQ and FRQ
Unlike most AP humanities exams, AP Statistics weights its two sections identically — multiple choice and free response each make up exactly half of the composite.
Multiple choice (50%)
40 questions, each worth one raw point, scaled with (correct ÷ 40) × 50. There’s no penalty for guessing, so every question is worth answering.
Free response (50%)
Six FRQs, each scored 0–4 by AP readers using an Essentially-Correct / Partially-Correct / Incorrect rubric, for a raw total out of 24. That total is scaled with (sum ÷ 24) × 50.
The investigative task
FRQ 6 is a longer, multi-part investigation that integrates several statistical ideas. Some published scoring models give it extra weight in the official composite; this calculator scores it the same 0–4 as the other five for a simpler, transparent estimate.
Why the even split matters
Because MCQ and FRQ carry identical weight, there’s no single area to over-invest in — an hour spent improving statistical communication moves your composite by roughly the same amount as an hour spent on MCQ accuracy.

Where AP Stats scoring gets misread
Entering an FRQ score on a 0–6 or 0–9 scale
AP Statistics free-response questions are scored 0–4, not on the wider rubrics used by some other AP exams. A score entered above 4 gets clamped and won’t reflect your real result.
Assuming the investigative task counts extra here
Because it’s longer and multi-part, some published scoring models weight FRQ 6 more heavily. This calculator uses the simpler, widely referenced model where all six FRQs contribute equally to the 24 raw points — a deliberate simplification, disclosed here rather than hidden.
Treating the cutoff bands as official
College Board sets the real composite-to-score conversion after each administration through its annual standard-setting process. The bands here are commonly cited approximations, not a guarantee for your specific exam.
Averaging the six FRQ scores instead of summing them
The formula needs the total of all six FRQs out of 24, not an average out of 4. Averaging first understates your real free-response contribution.
Penalizing MCQ guesses
There’s no deduction for a wrong multiple-choice answer, so treat your MCQ raw score as simply the number of correct answers — don’t subtract anything for guesses or blanks.
