AP Chemistry is one of the few AP science exams where multiple-choice and free-response carry identical weight, which keeps the math straightforward.

The composite equation

Composite = (MCQ ÷ 60) × 50 + (FRQ ÷ 46) × 50. Each section can contribute up to 50 of the 100 composite points.

What this estimate leaves out

A composite in the low-to-mid 60s has consistently landed students in the largest single band — a 3 — in both years shown, which is why closing the gap between a 3 and a 4 usually comes down to a handful of extra FRQ points rather than a dramatically different study plan.

Where the points come from

AP Chemistry unit weighting on the multiple-choice section

Your MCQ raw score is not spread evenly across the course. The College Board’s Course and Exam Description assigns each of the nine units a weighting range, and three units carry more than half the multiple-choice section between them.

Ranges come from the AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description and shift slightly from year to year, so treat them as planning guidance rather than a fixed formula. Unit 3 alone accounts for close to a fifth of the multiple-choice section, which makes it the single highest-leverage unit to review before guessing at your raw score.

Where students misread AP Chemistry scoring

Mixing raw points and percentages in one calculation

A “42” typed as 42% is a very different score than 42 out of 60. Entering a raw MCQ count into percentage mode (or vice versa) throws off the weighted result significantly, which is why switching modes clears the fields automatically.

Assuming a strong section can offset a weak one indefinitely

Because both sections cap out at 50 points each, even a perfect multiple-choice score cannot fully compensate for a very low free-response score. The examples above show this directly.

Treating the composite cutoffs as official

The College Board finalizes the real composite-to-score conversion after each exam administration based on that year’s difficulty. The ranges here are commonly cited estimates, not a guaranteed conversion for your exam.

Using 60 as the FRQ denominator

AP Chemistry’s free-response section maxes out at 46 raw points, not 60 like the MCQ section. Dividing your FRQ total by the wrong denominator understates your real weighted score.

Leaving MCQ answers blank out of caution

Since incorrect multiple-choice answers carry no penalty, an educated guess never costs you points. Your MCQ raw score is simply the number of questions answered correctly, so answer every question.
