Why Use an AP World Score Calculator
AP World History: Modern is made up of two exam portions and four different question types, and the College Board assigns significantly different weights to each. The multiple-choice portion alone accounts for 40% of your total score, which is almost equal to the sum of the three free-response components combined. Because there are only nine available SAQ raw points, a few extra SAQ points can therefore move your score more than students expect, while a strong DBQ still can’t fully offset a weak MCQ section — which is exactly why it’s easy to misjudge your true performance without running the numbers.
This AP World score calculator applies the precise (raw ÷ max) × weight method to each part, then adds the results into a 0–100 composite and translates that composite onto frequently used historical AP score cutoffs (1–5). In addition, it shows the number of composite points separating your current score from the next score band, so you can decide whether a particular section deserves extra study time before test day.
Four sections, four different weights
Each of the four question categories across the two exam portions of AP World History contributes differently to your final score, since the multiple-choice portion alone is nearly as valuable as the sum of the three essay-based components.
Multiple choice (40%)
55 questions with a simple number-correct score of (correct ÷ 55) × 40. Every question is worth answering, since there’s no penalty for guessing.
Short answer (20%)
Three SAQs scored 0–3 each for a raw total out of 9, scaled with (raw ÷ 9) × 20.
Document-based question (25%)
Scored 0–7 on thesis, contextualization, evidence, and analysis, scaled with (raw ÷ 7) × 25 — the single highest-weighted component of the exam.
Long essay (15%)
Scored 0–6, scaled with (raw ÷ 6) × 15. It’s the lowest-weighted section, but still worth more per raw point than most students expect.

- This isn’t a borderline case — it sits comfortably in the middle of the band, since the cutoff for a 4 is approximately 60.

- Predicted AP Score: 2 (Possibly qualified)
- This is around 0.7 composite points below the ≈46 cutoff for a 3, so a single additional multiple-choice question (worth approximately 0.7 points) could close the gap.
Where students misjudge their score
Averaging raw scores instead of weighting them
Adding 48 + 8 + 6 + 5 and treating that as “out of” some combined total ignores the fact that each part has a very distinct limit and weight. Instead, the first step is to convert each part to its weighted points.
Assuming a great DBQ can offset a weak MCQ
Because MCQ is worth 40% versus the DBQ’s 25%, a significant MCQ shortfall is harder to overcome than a significant DBQ shortfall. As a result, students frequently overinvest study time in essay preparation relative to its actual weight.
Treating the cutoffs as fixed and official
The 1–5 cutoffs displayed here are historical estimates rather than the actual conversion table for the current year, since College Board determines the precise cutoffs for each year after scoring, based on the exam’s difficulty, and doesn’t publicize them until scores are released.
Leaving MCQ answers blank
Because there’s no penalty for a wrong answer, unanswered multiple-choice questions cost you the same as incorrect ones. Always guess instead of skipping.
Forgetting SAQ has only 3 possible points per question
Each of the three SAQs is scored 0–3 individually rather than 0–9, so entering a single question’s score as if it were the section total will significantly overestimate the outcome. The 9-point total already represents all three questions combined.
