Why Use an AP World History Score Calculator
Unlike some other AP tests, AP World History: Modern is divided into four individually weighted parts: 55 multiple-choice questions (40%), three short answer questions (20%), a document-based question (25%), and a long essay question (15%). Students usually receive four distinct raw numbers on four different scales following a practice exam, and there’s no clear way to determine how these numbers add up to the well-known 1–5 score.

Where AP World History scoring gets misread
Treating this as an official conversion
The precise line between a 3 and a 4 can change since College Board changes the composite-to-scaled-score cutoffs annually based on the exam’s difficulty. Instead of using a guaranteed formula, this calculator makes use of frequently stated historical ranges.
Forgetting that each DBQ and LEQ point outweighs an MCQ point
A single point on the DBQ or LEQ, which have just seven and six available points respectively, moves your composite considerably more than a single multiple-choice question. Strong MCQ performance is harder to offset weak free-response scores with than the reverse.
Averaging SAQ scores instead of summing them
The three SAQs are not averaged — their individual 0–3 scores are added together to create a raw score out of 9. Your composite will be understated if you enter a “per-question average” rather than each individual score.
Assuming a passing MCQ score alone is enough
This exam doesn’t have a separate pass/fail floor per section like some other tests do, but even with a high MCQ raw score, a very low free-response score can pull the whole composite below the next scaled-scoring cutoff.
