Why Use an Age Grade Calculator
A 24-year-old’s interpretation of a flat 20:00 5K is very different from that of a 65-year-old. Age grading allows two individuals who ran entirely separate races on entirely different days to be compared on an even playing field by converting a raw finish time into a percentage of the corresponding world-class time for that runner’s exact age and gender.
Once you enter your age, gender, distance, and finish time, it calculates your group’s age-adjusted standard, compares it to your actual time, and produces a single age grade percentage along with the performance tier it falls into.
Comparing your time to an age-adjusted standard
Age grading compares your real time to the open (world-class) standard time for a distance after slowing it down to account for normal age-related decline.
The formula
Age Grade % = (Open Standard × Age Factor) ÷ Your Time × 100. Your time is either better than or closer to the age-adjusted benchmark if the percentage is higher.
The age factor
A simple 0.6% slowing allowance is applied by this calculator for each year that an individual is older than 25, which is the approximate peak age for distance running performance.

What this doesn’t include
The official WMA age-factor tables (which aren’t exactly linear), course-specific variables like weather or elevation, or age grading for those under 25.

Where age grading gets misread
Comparing raw times instead of age grades across ages
The 25-minute 5K of a 20-year-old and a 60-year-old are not comparable. Instead of comparing clock times, compare age grade percentages when ages differ.
Assuming this matches the official WMA tables exactly
This calculator uses a basic linear age-factor adjustment. Because the official World Masters Athletics tables are not exactly linear and are calibrated according to exact age, grades here are a close estimate rather than a verified score.
Entering the wrong time format
Half and full marathon times should be h:mm:ss; shorter distances should be mm:ss. If the hours field is dropped from a marathon time, the grade will be inflated and the finish time will be subtly understated.
Expecting an age adjustment under 25
This calculator does not apply a slowing allowance for runners under 25; instead, each runner in that age group is measured directly against the open standard. That’s deliberate, but easy to overlook.
Ignoring course conditions
Age grading only takes gender and age into consideration; it ignores factors like elevation, heat, wind, and course length, any of which can shift a time significantly beyond what the grade alone indicates.
